Rally legends renew rivalry

July 7, 2014

World Rally CHAMPIONS STIG Blomqvist and Björn Waldegård will contest the Robin Hood Rally on March 8/9, the opening round of the British Historic Rally Championship.

Blomqvist will drive a Ford Escort Mk1 entered by David Sutton, while 1979 Champion Waldegård (below) is due to star in the Lancia Stratos owned by Steve Perez.

“Björn was very excited at the prospect of taking on Stig in a Stratos,” said Perez, who is unable to drive the car as he is still recovering from a neck injury sustained on the Safari Classic late last year.

Subject to securing backing Blomqvist, the 1984 World Rally Champion, may continue in the historic series beyond the opening round.

Paul Lawrence

Here is a man who goes racing every weekend from March to October. Paul’s passion for the sport goes back to when he was a child of the 1960s. He has organised, competed in and marshalled on scores of events, and has written about the subject for 20 years. He is as at home in the paddock at Brands Hatch as in a Welsh forest or at Shelsley Walsh.
