Sir,

I recently took to task the motoring correspondent of the Financial Times for daring to suggest that heel-and-toe had no place in day-to-day motoring. He followed up my suggestion to ask the views of IAM and the Police. . . and they both appear to agree with him.

What do you and your other readers think?

[I spoke to the Institute of Advanced Motorists’ Deputy Chief Examiner, Mr David Ovenden, and was surprised to be told that they and the Police discourage the technique on the road. In the IAM test, braking and changing gear at the same time is considered a major fault, the theory being that the longer braking distance required without heel-and-toe is in itself a safety factor. I remain unconvinced. — G.C.]
