Porsche 356 defined – a pictorial guide by Brett Johnson ISBN: 0-929758-14-5

356 Carrera- the four cam cars by Cole Scrogham. ISBN: 0-929758-13-7

TPR Inc, Indianapolis, $29.95 ea.

Of these two books, Johnson’s is probably one for concours judges only, as it illustrates 356 variants in exhaustive detail, down to such things as door striker-plates and window-winders. Almost all photos are of restored cars, rather than original shots, even to the point of ‘colourising’ a period B&W. Scrogham has a more interesting tale to tell concerning the production four-cam cars, touching on the competition machines, and produces the better read, backed up by technical drawings of the confusingly various types. Deputy editor

Bravely ignoring his degree in industrial design after discovering night rallies in a Renault 8, GC joined Motor Sport by accident, in the Teesdale days around 1982 when Jenks and WB were office regulars and Mr Tee ruled with a rod of cardboard. He took part in some of the early historic rallies, winning one of the Pirelli Marathons, and regularly runs his Mk2 Jaguar in road events.
