At nigh on three hours, this season’s Goodwood Revival video verges on proving that you can have too much of a good thing. The track is bathed in beautiful autumn light, the cars make all the right sounds and moves, as does the urbane Alain de Cadenet— in between being t-boned in a Cooper, spreading a destroyer-like smokescreen in a Maserati and hopping out of a burning Ferrari.

But there is one vital ingredient missing from this offering, and it’s a very big thing: in-car footage. In truth, this omission makes for a samey feel, and you sense your finger creeping ever closer to the fast-forward button.

The Festival of Speed video, at less than 90 min and with a wider variety of cars, suffers less in this respect. But like its cousin, it reinforces the fact that you have to be there. If you enjoy these videos, and you will, the real thing would blow you away. PF
