Lack of entries scuppers Aintree sprint

Ambitious plans to bring competitive motor sport back to the Tatts Corner section of the former Grand Prix circuit at Aintree had to be abandoned when the speed event organised for May 16 was scrapped due to a lack of entries.

The 55/55 event was due to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the 1955 British Grand Prix, but a lack of competitor support forced the Aintree Circuit Club to cancel.

The intention had been to use the section of track in front of the main grandstands as a 600m sprint course, which would have been the first competitive motor sport on this part of the track since the full Grand Prix circuit closed for racing in 1964.

“Despite extensive promotion to clubs and competitors, the level of entries received was at a disappointing level which the club felt did not reflect the status and profile of the event,” said John Bailie of the Aintree Circuit Club.
