Vintage traffic queues in Chipping Norton one Wednesday in April indicated the opening of the Vintage Sports Car Club’s new HQ, in The Old Post Office, a handsome neo-Georgian building on the main road (01608 64477).

It must be a sign of the health of our hobby that these larger and grander premises will house six full-time staff to look after an ever-expanding membership, and include a roomy library where the club’s reference material can at last be accessible.

That ebullient motoring cleric Lionel Webber declared the offices open, and the president David Marsh replied, before a fine lunch and presentation of the Dunlop Series prizes.

Squeezed into the Competitions office was the newly restored 4.9-litre Type 54 Bugatti which Kaye Don ordered in 1932. But I came away jealous of the club’s magazine rack – their run of Motor Sports is complete. Ours isn’t. GC

Bravely ignoring his degree in industrial design after discovering night rallies in a Renault 8, GC joined Motor Sport by accident, in the Teesdale days around 1982 when Jenks and WB were office regulars and Mr Tee ruled with a rod of cardboard. He took part in some of the early historic rallies, winning one of the Pirelli Marathons, and regularly runs his Mk2 Jaguar in road events.
