Historic oval races survive storm

The futures of Rockingham motor speedway and the Coys Historic Festival have been assured, despite several recent changes at the highest levels of both organisations.

Britain’s new motorsport complex is scheduled to open with the Historic Festival over the weekend of 26-28 May, but has hit the headlines recently with a major management shake-up. At the same time, Jeffrey Pattinson has retired from Coys and sold his interest in the company to Douglas Jamieson. Although not confirmed by the circuit, neither Christopher Tate nor Peter Davis is now believed to be involved in the running of Rockingham, despite having initiated the project. Instead, British hilldirnb champion David Grace has been appointed Chief Executive. He quickly confirmed his support for the Festival, and is said to be determined to make it a top-class event. Coys also reaffirmed its commitment to the event.

Robert Ellis, formerly of the Vintage Sports Car Club, has joined Rockingham’s team and is gathering cars for the opening meeting. A celebration of oval racing will include a number of Indy roadsters. Despite falling behind schedule during Britain’s wet autumn, work at Rockingham is now reported to be close to target. PL
