Obituary – Tony Dean

British all-rounder Tony Dean, who was best known for scoring a surprise Can-Am victory at Road Atlanta in 1970, has died at the age of 75 following a short illness.

Dean, who raced everything from karts to Formula 1 machinery during a career which spanned five decades, claimed his famous Can-Am win aboard his own Porsche 908/2 (inset). He prevailed over the V8-powered machines in a race of attrition held in searing temperatures. The Yorkshire wheeler-dealer was a Formula 3 champion in Britain in 1965 and finished second in his lone F1 start in the non-championship Madrid Grand Prix at Jarama in 1969. He was a front runner in Formula 5000 in the early ’70s, finishing runner-up in the 1973 Rothmans series, and continued to race large-capacity single-seaters in the US into his sixties. GW
