Thiry uses Quattro drive to secure Spa win

Bruno Thiry’s decision to source an early Audi Quattro for the 52nd Boucles de Spa proved wise when he swept to victory on the biggest historic rally in Europe. Snow and ice greeted a star-studded entry in the Ardennes Mountains of Belgium and Thiry (left) was able to capitalise on his four-wheel-drive advantage. He could not relax, however, as an inspired Björn Waldegård fought all the way in his Ford Escort Mk2, and the result was only decided in Thiry’s favour on the final run through the Clementine gravel test.

“The most important thing is to be here,” said Thiry of the rally, which attracted 320 entries and a host of star names. “I’m still pleased to do some rallying and wanted to find a good car.” Local ace Patrick Snijers missed out on a hat-trick of wins but took third in his Escort Mk2, while Freddy Loix was a fine fourth in a Fiat Ritmo Abarth.
