South Africa isn’t blessed with a huge history of international motor sport success, but for a short while in the early ’60s it had a young hero in Tony Maggs. Battling against superstars Clark and Hill, Maggs not only competed at the highest level in F1, but also at Le Mans, Spa and in sports cars at his home track of Kyalami with some success.

This book recalls not only Maggs’ career, but a period of the country’s motor sport history from the late ’50s to the mid-60s. Written from the perspective of four different people, there is some repetition and, with images mostly from personal sources, this makes for a somewhat disjointed read. DC
