Bid for a ride

July 7, 2014

If you have ever fancied a ride in something truly spectacular — a D-type, Jaguar X1220, or even a McLaren M8F — this could be your chance. Our friendly rivals at Classic & Sportscar magazine are organising a bash at Castle Combe on November 4 at which you can bid for a ride round the circuit with the car and driver of your choice. The aim is to raise funds for the Stroke Association, as both Mike McCarthy of C&S and our own DSI have both recently been hit by this common and often devastating affliction.

So far John Surtees, Willie Green, Russell Brooks, Tiff Needell, Peter Hannen, Barrie Williams and Charlie Agg are amongst those on call; cars include Morgans, Healeys, Cand D-types, Maserati 300, GT40, Nick Harley’s Merlin-engined RR, Lister Storm, Aston DB7 and the fearsome McLaren.

To receive the latest car/driver list and a bidding form, write to Mike McCarthy, Classic & Sportscar, 38-42 Hampton Road, Teddington, Middx TW11 01E.

There is also to be a sponsored ‘All Car Run’, in which you can enter any car to finish at Castle Combe, clocking in at BP stations on the way, with prizes for best cars and most sponsorship. For details, contact Nicholas Agg-Manning, The Stroke Association, The Annexe, Ermen House, Butts Road, Exeter EX2 5BD.

He took part in some of the early historic rallies, winning one of the Pirelli Marathons, and regularly runs his Mk2 Jaguar in road events.
