As detailed in this issue, the Zerex Special is rammed full of cunning tweaks designed to swerve the rules, but not all are that complex. The story goes that Roger Penske managed to get the single-seater car through scrutineering in 1963 by cramming himself into the tiny makeshift passenger seat. Fair enough. But he was then told the car couldn’t run without a horn. So he simply bolted a borrowed bulb horn underneath the dash. Pleasingly, it’s still there…
