Marc Márquez is to miss yet another MotoGP race after it was announced he will not be taking part in this weekend’s Valencia Grand Prix, as well as the following test in Jerez, through injury.
The eight-time world champion was injured in an off-road training accident and missed last weekend’s Algarve Grand Prix due to suffering concussion.
Then, during his covalescence this week, Márquez reported suffering from problems with his vision. He was visited by a opthalmologist who diagnosed diplopia (double vision), aggravated in part by an old injury.
During his Moto2 tenure in 2011, Márquez suffered a serious eye injury to his right eyeball in a crash at Malayisa, putting his career into serious jeopardy. The Honda rider had damaged his trochlear nerve, which in turn caused paralysis of the superior oblique muscle – that which which helps to both stabilise and rotate the eye.
Now the same problem has recurred, requiring another period of recovery.

“The examination carried out on Marc Márquez today after the accident that occurred has confirmed that the rider has diplopia and has revealed a paralysis of the fourth right nerve with involvement of the right superior oblique muscle,” a statement released by HRC from Doctor Sánchez Dalmau said. “A conservative treatment with periodic updates has been chosen to follow with the clinical evolution. This fourth right nerve is the one that was already injured in 2011.”
The Spaniard missed most of last season after fracturing his right arm in the 2020 season opener in Jerez.
Armed with a metal plate in the injured limb, he made an aborted attempt to return at the next round before taking a sabbatical to recover.
He then broke the plate whilst attempting to open a heavy door at his home, necessitating another operation, before a third was then required due to an infection incurred in the previous one.
Test rider Stefan Bradl, who substituted for the Spaniard in Portugal last week and finished 15th, is expected to replace him again.
