Veteran broadcaster and F1 driver Martin Brundle has picked out the contender he's been most impressed with this year

Martin Brundle has said that the most impressive F1 driver this season wasn’t world champion Lando Norris, but the man who emerged as his late-season challenger.
Speaking at a Motor Sport gala event, the grand prix veteran and broadcaster picked out his man of the year.
“That would be Max [Verstappen],” he said. “Lando did a super job. He got really strong in the head, drove beautifully.

“Some of the races he won, he dominated in a style I’ve seen very few drivers do in 40 odd years I’ve been around F1.
“But you’d have to say Max is still the best driver on the grid.”
The battle between Norris, Verstappen and Piastri was one of the closest in over a decade, giving Brundle and co-commentator David Croft much to get excited about through the year.
“What a season we’ve had,” Brundle said when asked to pick out his best moment. “Lando winning the British Grand Prix springs to mind straight away.
“We’ve had some stunning races, some shockers, some surprises and then three great drivers fighting over the championship in the last round – all of them would have been worthy world champions, but Lando kept his head in the end.
“There are too many to choose from. Just extraordinary races, extraordinary events.”
While McLaren has been the form team of 2025, Verstappen staged an incredible comeback after the summer break.
Having been 104 points behind then-leader Oscar Piastri after Dutch GP, the Dutchman then put on a charge, winning six of the next nine grands prix.

While Norris did just enough to cling on to his championship lead, Verstappen finished the season just two points behind the Brit.
It made for a thrilling climax in what was the first three-or-more-driver F1 title finale in 15 years.
Verstappen himself rated this as his best year in the world championship, from a driver performance perspective.
“I have no regrets about my season,” he said. “I think the performance has been strong. I’ve hated this car at times, but I’ve also loved it at times.”
