When it opened in 1990, Nippon Autopolis was an ultra-modern facility built to attract Grand Prix racing to the remote mountain region of Kyushu on Japan's southern island. It made it as far as a provisional slot on the 1993 Formula 1 calendar, but bankruptcy ended its hopes of holding the Asian Grand Prix. Once hailed as the epitome of a modern, state-of-the art facility, the circuit faded from the international scene after holding just one World Sports Car race in 1991.
