Located beside Lake Kurwongbah, Queensland, Lakeside Raceway was built on Sid Sakzewski’s dairy farm by volunteers and the Queensland Motor Sporting Club. Fast and challenging, it was narrow and bumpy, so accidents marred early events after it opened on 19 March 1961. Jack Brabham won the first international fixture in 1962 and the club invested in 1964 to widen the track and improve facilities. It was a mainstay of the Tasman Series during the 1960s that was not for the fainthearted. That included holding the Australian Grand Prix to Tasman rules in 1966 and 1969.
