Originally a horse track built by landowner Julian S Carr, the name refers to the local Indian tribe. Bill France noticed the venue when he was flying his private aircraft, and he built a 0.9-mile dirt track that opened in September 1947. It held 32 NASCAR Cup races before it closed in 1968 due to local opposition.
