A half-mile horse track opened at the site of the California Exposition from 1906, around which a one-mile variant was added a year later. That course held motor races in 1907 and 1912, and motorised sport returned to the one-mile dirt oval after World War II. That was in September 1946, and the Golden State 100 became an annual highlight of what is now known as the IndyCar Series three years later. Jimmy Bryan won the event for three straight years (1953-55) and A.J. Foyt was a five-time winner during the 1960s. NASCAR also visited from 1956 to 1961, and a 2.1-mile road course operated from 1956 to 1969. The fairgrounds were sold for redevelopment as a shopping mall in October 1970.
