The 1923 French Grand Prix was a narrow, tricky road course set four miles north-west of Tours. The starting straight was on the steeply cambered RN158 that ran towards the town and ended in a hairpin at La Membrolle-sur-Choisille. The straight RN159 was by a right-hand turn and the road to Semblancay. It passed through the village before re-joining the RN158 once more. Dust proved a problem and drivers complained of the poor track surface. However, the 1923 Grand Prix was a notable affair for British motor racing for Henry Segrave won for Sunbeam – the first such victory for a British car or driver.
