Trenton

Built immediately after World War II on the sight of a half-mile dirt oval (which had been used as early as 1900), the New Jersey State Fairgrounds was a mainstay of IndyCar and Champ Car racing until 1979. Paved for its second race in 1957, it was a lightly banked oval. It was extended in a unique “kidney” shape with a 20-degree dogleg in the backstretch – a deviation required when a stubborn neighbour refused to sell her house. Trenton was always well attended and traditionally held two races, one in the spring and one in the autumn. The site is now a sculpture park, housing estate and UPS warehouse.
