The championship itself was a classic contest between acknowledged master Michael Schumacher and young pretender Fernando Alonso.<\/p>\n<p>Alonso and Renault were the class of the field from the start of the year and he eventually retained his title after a fast, consistent and virtually error-free campaign. The only doubts came after the FIA banned Renault\u2019s &#8220;mass damper&#8221; with the R26 suddenly no longer as competitive as before. However, the team regrouped\u00a0for whom\u00a0Alonso won seven times to clinch the title at the final round. Team-mate Giancarlo\u00a0Fisichella\u00a0won in Malaysia but was generally\u00a0out-paced\u00a0once more.<\/p>\n<p>Schumacher also won seven times to challenge Alonso all year but there was also a reminder of old controversies when he parked his car on the exit of La\u00a0Rascasse\u00a0during Monaco Grand Prix qualify to deny Alonso a chance of pole position.\u00a0This was to be the German\u2019s final season with Ferrari for he\u00a0announced his retirement from the sport he had so dominated at an emotional press conference at Monza. New team-mate Felipe Massa exceeded expectations and won in Turkey and Brazil, both from pole position.<\/p>\n<p>The only other team to win\u00a0a race\u00a0was Honda for whom Jenson Button scored a popular breakthrough victory\u00a0in Hungary\u00a0after mastering\u00a0changeable conditions. That seemed to give him a new level of confidence and he finished the season regularly finishing in the top five. Rubens\u00a0Barrichello\u00a0joined from Ferrari but could not match the Englishman\u00a0over the season.<\/p>\n<p>With relationships between its drivers and senior management strained to breaking points, McLaren failed to win a race in 2006.\u00a0Kimi\u00a0Raikkonen\u00a0challenged Alonso in Monaco and seemed set for victory in the Chinese rain before retiring\u00a0from both races.\u00a0Juan Pablo Montoya finished third at\u00a0Imola\u00a0and second in Monte Carlo but was promptly dropped after announcing he would switch to Chip\u00a0Ganassi\u2019s\u00a0NASCAR team in 2007. Reserve driver Pedro de la Rosa replaced the Colombian and finished second in Hungary.<\/p>\n<p>Williams endured a difficult season although GP2 graduate\u00a0Nico\u00a0Rosberg\u00a0did recover from an early unscheduled pitstop to score points on his debut in Bahrain. Almost as disappointing was Toyota although Ralf Schumacher did finish third in Australia.\u00a0Jarno\u00a0Trulli\u00a0would have matched that result in Monaco but for hydraulic failure six laps from the finish.<\/p>\n<p>Design genius\u00a0Adrian\u00a0Newey\u00a0joined Red Bull although the team\u2019s\u00a0initial\u00a0progress proved slow. David\u00a0Coulthard\u2019s\u00a0third\u00a0place finish in Monaco was the highlight and Dietrich\u00a0Mateschitz\u2019s\u00a0continued enthusiasm for F1 was\u00a0confirmed\u00a0when he\u00a0joined forces with\u00a0Gerhard Berger\u00a0to buy\u00a0Minardi. Scott Speed became the first American\u00a0F1 driver since 1993\u00a0but it was\u00a0Tonio\u00a0Liuzzi\u00a0who scored the renamed\u00a0Scuderia\u00a0Toro\u00a0Rosso\u2019s\u00a0only point when eighth in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p>Nick\u00a0Heidfeld\u00a0was a regular scorer for BMW\u00a0Sauber\u00a0with third in Hungary his best result. The disappointing Jacques Villeneuve was replaced by talented newcomer Robert\u00a0Kubica\u00a0that day\u00a0and the Pole\u00a0confirmed his promise by finishing third at Monza. Sebastian Vettel was the team\u2019s Friday test driver for the last five races and he\u00a0topped\u00a0the time sheets for\u00a0Friday\u2019s free\u00a0practice in Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Neither newcomers Super\u00a0Aguri\u00a0nor\u00a0what had been Jordan\u00a0Grand Prix\u00a0scored\u00a0a point during 2006. The latter began the year as Midland F1 but owner Alex\u00a0Shnaider\u00a0soon grew\u00a0tired\u00a0of F1 and sold\u00a0the\u00a0team\u00a0to\u00a0Spyker\u00a0Cars before the Italian GP\u00a0to\u00a0cue another name change.<\/p>\n<p>New qualifying rules were introduced with the hour split into three sessions\u00a0with\u00a0the slowest cars in Q1\u00a0and Q2 eliminated\u00a0to
