Renault\u2019s Fernando Alonso narrowly held off Michael Schumacher\u2019s challenge to win in Ferrari heartland and confirm a new superstar. That was Alonso\u2019s third win in a row and another four followed as he ended Schumacher\u2019s five-year reign to become the youngest World Champion to date. Giancarlo Fisichella returned to Renault and dominated the opening race in Australia from pole position but he would not win again \u2013 losing the Japanese GP on the last lap.<\/p>\n<p>Kimi Raikkonen won seven times for McLaren but could not recover from a slow start to the year when hampered by crucial technical failures. That\u00a0including\u00a0crashing out of the lead\u00a0on the last lap\u00a0of the European GP\u00a0when his\u00a0suspension\u00a0failed.\u00a0Juan Pablo Montoya finally began his tempestuous and ultimately short McLaren career\u00a0almost two years\u00a0after signing with the team. He missed a couple of races after injuring his shoulder playing tennis (or riding a mountain bike depending on who\u00a0you\u00a0chose to believe) but scored three high quality wins and came from the back of the grid to finish second in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The end of Ferrari\u2019s dominance was spectacular. Michael Schumacher\u00a0showed undiminished motivation and focus\u00a0but he only won once and that was a controversial affair.\u00a0The 2005 United States GP was an F1\u00a0nadir for all the Michelin-shod teams withdrew\u00a0on safety grounds\u00a0at the end of\u00a0the parade lap leaving just six cars to race. Ferrari finished 1-2 ahead of a couple of\u00a0Jordans\u00a0and\u00a0Minardis\u00a0amid\u00a0boos\u00a0from\u00a0the dissatisfied American crowd.<\/p>\n<p>New Williams-BMW drivers Nick\u00a0Heidfeld\u00a0and Mark Webber finished second and third at Monaco\u00a0in an otherwise\u00a0frustrating campaign. Furthermore, BMW decided to buy the Sauber team rather than continue its partnership with\u00a0the nine-time constructors\u2019\u00a0champions. Felipe Massa outperformed Jacques Villeneuve for the Swiss privateers\u00a0to earn\u00a0a Ferrari drive for 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Now\u00a0wholly\u00a0owned by Honda, BAR were unable to build on its promising 2004 form. Worse still,\u00a0they\u00a0were banned for two races after the BAR 007\u2019s fuel system was deemed illegal at the San Marino GP.\u00a0For Jenson Button, who qualified on pole in Canada and\u00a0scored a couple of third\u00a0place finishes, the Williams\/BMW split prompted further expensive contract negotiations. He eventually bought his way out of his future with Williams to remain loyal to Honda.<\/p>\n<p>Perennial underachievers Toyota invested heavily in\u00a0Jarno\u00a0Trulli\u00a0and Ralf Schumacher and the Italian finished second in Malaysia and Bahrain. He also qualified on pole in America when fuelled light in the knowledge that he would not start\u00a0the race. Schumacher\u2019s second successive crash at Indy was again caused by a puncture and prompted Michelin\u2019s\u00a0embarrassing\u00a0mass withdrawal come\u00a0raceday.<\/p>\n<p>This was a period of change for F1\u2019s midfield.\u00a0Dietrich\u00a0Mateschitz\u2019s\u00a0Red Bull energy drink company bought Jaguar Racing\u00a0and signed\u00a0David\u00a0Coulthard\u00a0as team leader\u00a0who\u00a0only lost a possible podium at the\u00a0Nurburgring\u00a0due to a drive through penalty.\u00a0Christian\u00a0Klien\u00a0and\u00a0Tonio\u00a0Liuzzi\u00a0shared the second car and both scored points \u2013 the Italian on his debut at\u00a0Imola. Russian born steel magnet Alex\u00a0Shnaider\u00a0acquired Jordan for whom rookie Tiago Monteiro finished third in the farce\u00a0that was the US GP.<\/p>\n\n                            <div
