The FIA specified 1600cc turbocharged hybrid engines for 2014, complete with complicated energy recovery systems. While this was an important step down the ecological path, the expensive technology placed further financial strain on all but the richest teams, and was criticised for the lack of engine noise. What it did produce was a classic championship head-to-head between team-mates that had raced against each other since childhood.<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes were the team to beat and by a greater margin than imagined before the season. Lewis Hamilton and\u00a0Nico\u00a0Rosberg\u00a0won all-but three of the races\u00a0but senior management\u2019s decision to not impose team orders set up a classic contest.\u00a0Rosberg\u00a0appeared on course for the title before they ran into each other\u00a0during the Belgian Grand Prix, an incident that\u00a0earned\u00a0Rosberg\u00a0public censure from the team and prompted Hamilton to win the next five GPs. Both entered the final race in Abu Dhabi, curiously worth double points this year, with a chance of the title but it was Hamilton who won for the 11th time to clinch his second world title.\u00a0Rosberg\u00a0won five times and\u00a0out-qualified\u00a0his team-mate\u00a0to win the\u00a0inaugural\u00a0FIA\u00a0Pole Position Trophy.<\/p>\n<p>Red Bull-Renault\u00a0finished\u00a0as championship runners-up but it was a disappointing final season with the team for Sebastian Vettel. He was comprehensibly outshone by the impressive Daniel\u00a0Ricciardo\u00a0who\u00a0scored\u00a0all three of the\u00a0team\u2019s wins. Red Bull was hampered by\u00a0uncompetitive\u00a0Renault engines and poor reliability but Riccardo emerged as a true star. That\u00a0prompted the champion for the last four seasons to look for a new challenge\u00a0in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Williams switched to Mercedes-power, attracted Martini sponsorship and provided one of the most welcome stories of 2014. Felipe Massa arrived from Ferrari and qualified on pole position in Austria. Second in Abu Dhabi was one of\u00a0his\u00a0three podium finishes but it was\u00a0Valtteri\u00a0Bottas\u00a0who emerged\u00a0as a class act. The\u00a0Finn\u00a0was second in Britain and Germany\u00a0and third on four occasions as he finished fourth in the championship. Williams-Mercedes returned from relative obscurity to clinch a popular third\u00a0overall.<\/p>\n<p>In its last year powered by Mercedes, McLaren began with rookie Kevin\u00a0Magnussen\u00a0and Jenson Button finishing second and third in Australia to briefly lead the constructors\u2019\u00a0standings. However, that was the highlight as they\u00a0struggled\u00a0to develop the recalcitrant MP4\/29.<\/p>\n<p>Also winless (for the first time since 1993) was Ferrari. Both Stefano\u00a0Domenicali\u00a0and then Marco\u00a0Mattiacci\u00a0were replaced\u00a0as Team Principal and President Luca di\u00a0Montezemolo\u00a0also moved on at the end of the season. Fernando Alonso challenged for victory in Hungary before finishing second but\u00a0Kimi\u00a0Raikkonen\u00a0finished no higher than fourth and was only 12th in the final points\u00a0on his return to the team.<\/p>\n<p>Force India benefited from Mercedes-power with\u00a0Nico\u00a0Hulkenberg\u00a0consistently in the points and Sergio Perez third in Bahrain. Daniil\u00a0Kvyat\u00a0emerged as rookie of the year with\u00a0the FIA recognising that achievement for the first time at its\u00a0end-of-season\u00a0prize giving. The Russian qualified fifth\u00a0for\u00a0his inaugural home race but it was team-mate Jean-Eric\u00a0Vergne\u00a0who delivered the bulk of Toro\u00a0Rosso\u2019s\u00a0points. Nevertheless,\u00a0Kvyat\u2019s\u00a0promise was rewarded with promotion to Red Bull Racing in 2015 while &#8220;JEV&#8221; was released.<\/p>\n<p>It was tough\u00a0going\u00a0at the wrong end of the grid.\u00a0Sauber\u00a0failed to score\u00a0a point\u00a0for the first\u00a0time in\u00a0F1 and the cash-strapped Lotus squad rarely did better. Both\u00a0Marussia\u00a0and Caterham\u00a0had\u00a0slipped into administration by the end of the season with the former experiencing triumph and\u00a0despair.\u00a0Marussia\u00a0had scored points for the first time when\u00a0Jules Bianchi\u00a0finished in a fine ninth\u00a0place in Monaco. But the Frenchman suffered severe head injuries when he crashed into a support vehicle during the Japanese GP.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0FIA\u00a0introduced\u00a0permanent numbers for\u00a0F1\u00a0drivers.
