Forever linked with <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/mercedes-benz\/\">Mercedes-Benz<\/a>, he dominated when the marque returned to the sport in the\u00a0mid\u00a01930s\u00a0but\u00a0Caracciola\u2019s\u00a0life was also touched by tragedy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background and early racing career\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of Sicilian descent and the son of a hotel owner who was also a wine merchant, the young Caracciola worked for the Fafnir Car Company as an apprentice until a drunken fight with a Belgian army officer. For fear of reprisals, the youngster moved to Dresden in the East where he worked in Fafnir\u2019s showroom.<\/p>\n<p>It was in one of the company\u2019s 1500cc machines that he finished fourth on his car racing debut at\u00a0Avus\u00a0in 1922. His first association with Mercedes was as a salesman in Dresden and he started competing with a borrowed Merc on\u00a0hillclimbs\u00a0and trials from 1923. He was a race winner on both two- and four-wheels for the next few seasons before dedicating his future to cars from 1926.<\/p>\n<p><strong>German Grand Prix winner\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That year\u2019s inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1926-german-grand-prix\/\">German GP<\/a> was held amid unrelenting rain on Berlin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/avus\/\">Avus circuit<\/a>. Caracciola drove a 2-litre Mercedes M72\/94 borrowed from the factory and scored his breakthrough victory despite stalling at the start. The 17,000DM prize money was not only his first big payday but was enough to allow him to marry.<\/p>\n<p>He won the race again in <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1928-german-grand-prix\/\">1928<\/a> (now held at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/nurburgring\/\">N\u00fcrburgring<\/a>) and was third in the first <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1929-monaco-grand-prix\/\">Monaco GP<\/a> a year later driving the cumbersome Mercedes-Benz SSK. By now, he was running a semi-works Mercedes SSKL as the worsening economic climate had forced the factory to withdraw official backing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alfa Romeo, accident at Monte Carlo and further tragedy\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite his success, Mercedes was eventually forced to quit racing completely so\u00a0Caracciola\u00a0joined <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/alfa-romeo\/\">Alfa Romeo<\/a> in 1932, his car painted white for much of the year \u2013 the national racing\u00a0colour\u00a0of Germany. A third <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1932-german-grand-prix\/\">German GP<\/a> win and the outright European\u00a0Hillclimb\u00a0title were the highlights of a season marred by team orders and the jealousy of some of his Italian team-mates.<\/p>\n<p>He formed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/scuderia-cc\/\">Scuderia\u00a0CC<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/louis-chiron\/\">Louis Chiron<\/a> for the following season but the venture was\u00a0short-lived. The German crashed at the Chicane during practice at Monaco and broke his thigh so badly that he nearly lost his right leg. But a rousing ovation when guest of honour at Monaco that year, and perhaps his ever-closer friendship with Alice &#8220;Baby&#8221;\u00a0Hoffmann (Chiron\u2019s partner at the time) helped him start living again.<\/p>\n<p>Chiron had made it clear that he was not going to marry Alice despite her asking on more than one occasion. After another rebuff, she accepted Rudi\u2019s proposal in 1937 and they were married in Lugano. By which time\u00a0Caracciola\u00a0was once more Europe\u2019s leading\u00a0driver with the Mercedes-Benz &#8220;Silver Arrows&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The return of Mercedes-Benz\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Walking with a pronounced limp and still recovering from his injuries,\u00a0Caracciola\u00a0returned with the new Mercedes-Benz W25 in 1934. He led the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1934-german-grand-prix\/\">German GP<\/a> and shared victory with <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/luigi-fagioli\/\">Luigi\u00a0Fagioli<\/a>\u00a0in the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1934-italian-grand-prix\/\">Italian GP<\/a> but that was merely the prelude to his most successful season so far.<\/p>\n<p>He won six of his 11 races during 1935 after spirited duels with disobedient team-mate\u00a0Fagioli\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/auto-union\/\">Auto Union<\/a>\u2019s brilliant newcomer <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/bernd-rosemeyer\/\">Bernd\u00a0Rosemeyer<\/a>.\u00a0Caracciola\u00a0completed his resurgence by being declared European Champion for 1935.<\/p>\n<p>The 1936 Mercedes was disappointing and although he <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1936-monaco-grand-prix\/\">won in the Monaco rain<\/a>,\u00a0Caracciola\u00a0was generally outpaced by\u00a0Rosemeyer. The next two seasons were\u00a0Caracciola\u2019s\u00a0however \u2013 winning another six major races and the European Championship in <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1937-european-championship\/\">1937<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1938-european-championship\/\">1938<\/a>. His rivalry with\u00a0Rosemeyer\u00a0was classic motor racing theatre \u2013 the old master challenged by a carefree young challenger. They were head-to-head for another speed record attempt on the Darmstadt motorway when\u00a0Rosemeyer\u00a0was killed on January 28\u00a01938.\u00a0Caracciola\u2019s\u00a0old injuries and advancing years were taking their toll but he still won a sixth <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1939-german-grand-prix\/\">German GP<\/a> in 1939.<\/p>\n<p><strong>World War II and subsequent life\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Caracciolas\u00a0spent World War\u00a0II\u00a0in Switzerland during which time he took Swiss nationality and allegedly displayed a BRDC badge on the front of his car throughout.<\/p>\n<p>He tried to race again after the war but suffered severe head injuries while\u00a0practising\u00a0for the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1946-indianapolis-500\/\">1946 Indianapolis 500<\/a>.
