But the Ickx name is now better known for his son \u2013 six-time Le Mans winner Jacky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Early racing career<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Apparently bored by a first visit to the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1960-belgian-grand-prix\/\">Belgian GP<\/a>, the young Ickx started racing motorcycles in 1960 with some promise. Having served his national service in the Belgian Army, he switched to saloon cars with a <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/lotus\/\">Lotus<\/a> Cortina. He then drove Alan Mann\u2019s Ford Mustang to win the over-1600cc class of the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1965-european-touring-car-championship\/\">1965 European Touring Car Championship<\/a>. A switch to a works <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/bmw\/\">BMW<\/a> 2000Ti for the following year\u2019s Spa 24 Hours delivered victory in his national race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He also drove Ken Tyrrell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/matra\">Matra<\/a> in Formula 3 and F2 during 1966. Second at <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/zandvoort\/\">Zandvoort<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/zolder\/\">Zolder<\/a> in F3, he impressed in qualifying for the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1966-german-grand-prix\/\">German Grand Prix<\/a> when 8.4 seconds quicker than any other Formula 2 car. Ickx responded with a fine breakthrough victory in the wet <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1968-french-grand-prix\/\">1968 French GP<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/paris-rouen\/\">Rouen<\/a> in one of six consecutive top-four finishes. On pole for the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1968-german-grand-prix\/\">German GP<\/a>, he also won three sports car races in Wyer\u2019s Gulf Ford GT40 before a broken leg while practising in Canada ended his slim world championship hopes. <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1968-f1-world-championship\/\">Ickx eventually finished fourth in the F1 standings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A conflict between oil sponsors in F1 and sports cars forced a 1969 move to <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/brabham\/\">Brabham<\/a> in F1 and he won the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1969-german-grand-prix\/\">German<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1969-canadian-grand-prix\/\">Canadian GPs<\/a>. Ickx raced eventual champion <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/jackie-stewart\/\">Jackie Stewart<\/a> wheel-to-wheel on both occasions and <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1969-f1-world-championship\/\">finished runner-up in the world championship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Le Mans winner for the first time<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Le Mans 24 Hours would become integral to the Ickx story and he won for the first time in the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1969-le-mans-24-hours\/\">epic 1969 event<\/a>. The GT40 he shared with <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/jackie-oliver\/\">Jackie Oliver<\/a> was outpaced by <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/porsche\/\">Porsche<\/a>\u2019s new 917 but Ickx was on top form and defeated <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/hans-herrmann\/\">Hans Herrmann<\/a>\u2019s last remaining works Porsche by 100 yards after two frantic final hours. However, driving home after the race, Ickx crashed his Porsche Targa into a telegraph pole when he swerved to avoid an oncoming car that had strayed onto his side of the road. He escaped with bruising and shock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Challenging for the world title with Ferrari<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ickx returned to Ferrari for <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1970-f1-world-championship\/\">1970<\/a> but suffered a fiery accident on the opening lap at <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1970-spanish-grand-prix\/\">J\u00e1rama<\/a>. Jackie Oliver crashed into him and their wrecked cars were engulfed in a fireball with Ickx suffering burns. Ickx did not miss a race and eventually emerged as the closest challenger for <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/jochen-rindt\/\">Jochen Rindt<\/a> and the new Lotus 72. They fought a classic duel at <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1970-german-grand-prix\/\">Hockenheim<\/a> but it was Rindt who prevailed. He left Ferrari during a disappointing <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1973-f1-world-championship\/\">1973 campaign<\/a> but victory in the non-championship <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1974-race-of-champions\/\">Race of Champions<\/a> a year later was the highlight of two frustrating seasons with Lotus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ickx won the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1975-le-mans-24-hours\/\">1975 Le Mans 24<\/a> Hours with a Gulf Mirage GR8-Ford and <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/derek-bell\/\">Derek Bell<\/a>. He continued as an occasional F1 driver until 1979 with <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/williams\/\">Williams<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/wolf-racing\">Wolf<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/ensign-racing\/\">Ensign<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/ligier\/\">Ligier<\/a> and won that year\u2019s Can-Am title driving Carl Haas\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/lola\/\">Lola<\/a> T333CS-Chevrolet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Le Mans legend with Porsche<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It was while leading Porsche\u2019s sports car team that he secured his legendary status. He joined the Stuttgart marque in 1976 and won four of his first five races prior to the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1976-le-mans-24-hours\/\">Le Mans 24 Hours<\/a>. He then shared the winning Porsche 936 with <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/gijs-van-lennep\/\">Gijs van Lennep<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/le-mans-circuit-de-la-sarthe\/\">Circuit de la Sarthe<\/a> and repeated that success <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1977-le-mans-24-hours\/\">a year later<\/a>, now with <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/hurley-haywood\/\">Hurley Haywood<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/jurgen-barth\/\">J\u00fcrgen Barth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Second in <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1978-le-mans-24-hours\/\">1978<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1980-le-mans-24-hours\/\">1980<\/a>, he won the race for a fifth time when reunited with Bell in <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1981-le-mans-24-hours\/\">1981<\/a>. The Porsche 956 was introduced in 1982 and another <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1982-le-mans-24-hours\/\">Ickx\/Bell Le Mans victory<\/a> was its first success in the WSC in a 1-2-3 for the team. However, his young German rival was in a private Porsche when he attempted to go side-by-side with Ickx into Eau Rouge during the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1985-spa-1000kms\/\">1985 Spa 1000Kms<\/a>. Contact was inevitable and proved fatal for Bellof.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ickx, who had won the 1983 Paris-Dakar Rally Raid with a <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/mercedes-benz\/\">Mercedes-Benz<\/a>, retired from racing after the 1985 season. He later served as chief steward at Monaco and has guided the sports car career of his daughter <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/vanina-ickx\/\">Vanina<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Superb in the wet and with a reputation as a master of the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/nurburgring\/\">N\u00fcrburgring<\/a>, Ickx\u2019s tally of eight GP victories was a disappointing return for someone who originally seemed destined to be F1 world champion.
