Fourth in the championship that year, he intended to continue with KV Racing but the series entered administration with its competitors (including the Australian) transferred to the strengthened IRL. He began 2011 by qualifying on pole for the first four races and winning twice. Four more victories followed but Power was beaten to the title by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Franchitti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0once more in the tragic\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Las Vegas finale. He was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hospitalised<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in the horrendous accident that claimed Dan Wheldon\u2019s life with Power confirmed as runner-up.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:113,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:288}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The class of the field at the start of 2012, he won three of the first four races to take a stranglehold in the points. That run came to a violent end when Mike Conway collected him during the Indianapolis 500. While Power did not win again, he still entered the final round 17 points ahead of Ryan Hunter-Reay. However, he crashed out at Fontana to finish runner-up for a third successive season<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He remained among the quickest drivers in the series but did not feature in the 2013 title fight.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Invariably a strong qualifier, he suffered on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">raceday<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0at the start of the season and it was June before he finished in the top three. But he won three of the last five races to clinch fourth in the standings and remind pundits of his title-winning potential.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indyc<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ar<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0champion at last<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Having come so close during his decade racing at the top of North American open wheel competition, Power finally came good in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. He won the opening race at St Petersburg and finished in the top 10 for the first half of the season. That included another win in Detroit b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">efore<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a mid-season slump<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and several penalties for blocking and speeding in the pitlane<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0saw his points lead overhauled by Penske team-mate Castroneves. However, victory from pole position at Milwaukee proved decisive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and Power clinched a first\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indyc<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0title by coming from the back of the grid to finish ninth in the final round at Fontana.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The reigning champion qualified on the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">front row for 11 of the 16\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indyc<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0rounds of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2015<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but that consistent pace was not always translated into hard results. He won the Indianapolis GP and finished a career-best second in the Indy 500 itself. But he did not score another podium finish and slumped to third in the final standings.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He was in the hunt once more in 2016 despite missing the opening race through concussion. A mid-season purple patch during which he finished first o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0second for six races in a row meant Power challenged Penske team-mate Simon Pagenaud until the final round. He won four times but ultimately lost out to the Frenchman when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">championship\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">runner-up for a fourth time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Historic victories at Indianapolis<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Power\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">counted the Indianapolis Grand Prix among his\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">three\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">victories\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2017 but first lap incidents\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and a puncture while dominating at Barber stymied another title charge.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">repeated that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indianapolis\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">road course victory\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in 2018\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to deliver Team Penske\u2019s 200th IndyCar\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">race win.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Power<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0then beat Ed Carpenter in the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indianapolis\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">500\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">itself<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to become the first driver to win both events at the Speedway, and the first Australian to win America\u2019s most famous race.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Chevrolet\u2019s inferior fuel mileage limited his performance thereafter, especially on ovals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but he passed both Scott Dixon and Alexander Rossi\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to score a third victory of the season at St Louis\u2019 Gateway Park. Gearbox issues thwarted his challenge at Portland a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Power\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">came\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">third in the standings.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now 40 years old, Power entered his 11th season with Team Penske in 2019. alike.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There were penalties at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Long Beach<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the Indy 500<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(for hitting a crew member\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a pitstop), Toronto and Iowa.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">His<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0drive through the field\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during Detroit\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">first race was ruined when he le<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ft<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the pits on three wheels<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and he crashed at St Louis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Power<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0finally scored his first victory of the year when the Pocono 500\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s stopped for rain, and he repeated that success in the penultimate round at Portland.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Second\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at Laguna\u00a0<\/span><span
