He won a race during that rookie season and graduated to the Busch (now\u00a0Xfinity)\u00a0Series in 2001.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Busch Series Champion for DEI\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He joined Dale Earnhardt Inc for his first full Busch Series schedule in 2004 and won back-to-back titles. Truex also made his debut at the highest level of stock car racing for the team in the 2004 Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta. He started seven Cup races in 2005 and finished seventh in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NASCAR Cup graduation\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Truex graduated full-time in 2006 and completed the season by finishing second at Homestead. 2007 was his breakthrough campaign with victory at Dover one of seven top-five results. He also qualified on pole position at Texas as he finished 11th in the standings.<\/p>\n<p>However, rather than propel Truex into championship contention, he did not qualify for the Chase for the Cup and\u00a0would\u00a0not win again for six seasons. He was on pole for the 2009 Daytona 500 and at Atlanta before switching\u00a0to Michael Waltrip Racing\u2019s Toyota Camry for 2010. That included further pole positions at Dover in 2010 and 2011 and a second-place finish at Bristol that latter year.<br \/>\nHis 2012 season included another pole position at Texas and a second-place finish next time out at Kansas. That helped him qualify for the Chase and he finished second once more at that oval in October. Truex\u00a0equaled\u00a0his previous best Cup season by finishing 11th overall once more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Success and controversy with\u00a0Michael Waltrip Racing\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Truex finally ended\u00a0his 218 race winless run\u00a0by\u00a0beating road course specialist Jeff Gordon at\u00a0Sears Point\u00a0in 2013.\u00a0He was second at Texas Motor Speedway in the spring\u00a0and did not miss a race despite breaking\u00a0his wrist at Bristol. However, Truex\u00a0was central to\u00a0controversy\u00a0at Richmond\u00a0when team-mate Clint Bowyer\u00a0was accused of\u00a0deliberately\u00a0spinning\u00a0to ensure Truex qualified for the Chase.\u00a0NASCAR fined the team $300,000 and\u00a0penalised the drivers so\u00a0Truex\u00a0lost his place in\u00a0the Chase as a consequence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Furniture Row Racing\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Worse still, that\u00a0scandal led to\u00a0his\u00a0sponsor withdrawing\u00a0its support\u00a0and Truex\u00a0was left\u00a0without a ride for 2014. Salvation came from\u00a0the\u00a0one car\u00a0Furniture Row Racing\u00a0who promptly signed Truex (and his entire pit crew)\u00a0to replace the Stewart-Haas-bound Kurt Busch.\u00a0On the front row\u00a0for the\u00a02014\u00a0Daytona 500,\u00a0that proved a\u00a0difficult campaign\u00a0that was overshadowed by his partner Sherry Pollex\u2019s battle against ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Truex began 2015 with his Chevrolet SS finishing\u00a014 of the first 15 races\u00a0in the top 10\u00a0although a third career victory remained elusive until\u00a0Pocono.\u00a0Despite successive accidents at Sears Point and Daytona, the minnows qualified\u00a0for the Chase and Truex\u00a0made it\u00a0into the\u00a0\u201cChampionship Four\u201d but could only finish 12th in that\u00a0decider\u00a0at Homestead. That meant that Truex finished in a\u00a0career-best fourth in the final\u00a0NASCAR\u00a0standings.<\/p>\n<p>Furniture Row switched to Toyota\u00a0in\u00a02016\u00a0and Truex responded with four victories and another title charge. His\u00a0campaign began\u00a0by losing\u00a0the all-important Daytona 500\u00a0by\u00a00.010 seconds\u00a0in the closest finish to the race so far. Denied victory when the class-of-the-field\u00a0at Texas, he qualified on pole for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlottle before leading all-but eight laps on the way to\u00a0an impressive\u00a0victory. Another three successes followed, including the Southern 500 at Darlington, but Truex was eliminated from the Chase when his engine failed at Talladega.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NASCAR Champion\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Toyota was the only manufacturer to introduce a new car in 2017 and Truex eased to a dominant NASCAR title\u00a0thanks to eight victories.\u00a0The\u00a0quickest and most consistent\u00a0driver during\u00a0the\u00a0regular season,\u00a0he\u00a0continued that form in NASCAR\u2019s new \u201cstage\u201d format\u00a0play-offs and\u00a0withstood Kyle Busch\u2019s\u00a0faster car in the closing stages\u00a0at Homestead\u00a0to seal\u00a0a deserved first NASCAR Cup.<\/p>\n<p>He won four times during the first half of his title defence in 2018. However, much of that season was played out with the future of Furniture Racing in doubt. Truex still qualified for \u201cThe Chase for the Cup\u201d despite this distraction but finished second to Joey Logano in the deciding race at Homestead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Move to Joe Gibbs Racing\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Furniture Row closed down at the end of the year so Truex joined Joe Gibbs Racing in 2019. He won seven times, more than any other driver,\u00a0and entered \u201cThe Chase\u201d as the dominant driver.\u00a0Seemingly on his way to the title in the final race at Homestead, his crew fitted the front tyres the wrong way around and Truex lost a lap while the error was reversed. He charged back into second but lost the title to team-mate Kyle Busch by 4.6sec.<\/p>\n<p>After a difficult start to 2020, Truex rebounded to win at Martinsville to make the playoffs. He also scored eight consecutive top four finishes in the lead up to the beginning of the Playoffs. A second-place finish at Richmond was good enough to see Truex into the Round of 12, and a fourth and sixth-place finish at Las Vegas and Charlotte Roval respectively took him into the Round of 8. He was in line to win at Texas until a last-lap pass by Cole Custer stole the win away. A disastrous race at Martinsville took him out of contention for the Final Four. Truex had fought with eventual winner Chase Elliott for the lead but went on to finish 22nd and was eliminated from the Playoffs.<\/p>\n\n                    <\/section>\n\n
